For some of us, work schedules, baby’s bedtime, or personal comfort don’t jive with traditional October 31st trick-or-treating. For others, one night isn’t enough time to go all out for Halloween! Fortunately, there are plenty of festive trunk-or-treat events open to the public this fall in Loudoun County.

Whether you’re searching for a church community event, free admission, or pet-friendly treats, we have you covered. Let’s discuss when and where to find all those classic Halloween feels in LoCo this October.

What does it mean to “trunk-or-treat?”

Daytime trunk-or-treat events have been popping up over the past few decades as a safer alternative to nighttime trick-or-treating. Local churches held the first trunk-or-treat festivities to bring communities together.

The premise of trunk-or-treat is simple. Rather than going door-to-door, kids (and grown-ups!) dressed in costumes go from car trunk to car trunk to receive candy or other small treats. Today, churches, community groups, and local businesses typically host these parking lot events.

Here in Loudoun, trunk-or-treat is now so popular many participate in addition to traditional trick-or-treating (guilty!).  Trunk-or-treat events in 2022 often include a wealth of additional Halloween activities, such as games, crafts, music, food, and costume contests.

How do you participate in a trunk-or-treat event?

Most trunk-or-treat events have at least two types of participants:

  1. “Trunk-or-treaters” (children and families who make their rounds to collect candy)
  2. Trunk hosts (volunteers responsible for providing decorated cars and passing out the goods)

Number two will nearly always require advance sign-up. While most events are walk-ins for trunk-or-treaters, a few require advance registration, so always read event details carefully.

What should I bring to a trunk-or-treat event?

Trunk or Treaters

If you are trunk-or-treating you will typically just show up with your kids in costumes and walk around the various trunks provided by the event host.

Events will sometimes provide goodie bags; however, you may wish to bring a trick-or-treat bucket just in case!

Trunk Hosts

Specifications on trunk decor and treats are often set by each event coordinator. In most situations, you’ll want to bring:

  • Decorations for your trunk theme (e.g., balloons, streamers, tablecloth, candy basket)
  • Tape, scissors, and any other gear needed to set up your decor
  • Extra water and snacks for you/your kids
  • Candy treats or small toys to pass out to children of all ages*

*If you are providing treats for a trunk-or-treat event this year, consider including some non-food items in your stash for very young children and those with allergies!
